The true intent of editing is to make existing copy better. When an author is signed with a large publisher, as many as five or six individuals of varying responsibilities may work on that book. The author is usually aware of the editing that's being done; however, there are instances when the author has complained that the final product is hardly a representation of the original work.
It is Maverick Literary's policy to include the author in the entire editing process. Our goal is never to lose the author's literary voice because we recognize this is a major investment that you've made, and we want to give you your money's worth.
1. Heavy Editing — As previously stated, the goal of editing is to make the writer's copy/manuscript better. Some require extensive work. This may include revisions and rewriting sections of the manuscript. It may also include changes in facts, characters, the storyline, and the order in which information will be presented. Other areas include immediacy and the reduction of excessive dialogue tags. Attention is placed on ensuring the copy/manuscript reads like a novel (fiction) or work of expertise (non-fiction). The quoted price is usually on the higher end of the Maverick Literary Book Editing price range. 2. Moderate Editing — Much of the work that is performed with heavy editing is done here, but it is less extensive. As a side note, editing is very much subjective as it is objective; however, it is generally agreed upon that the goal of writing is to be clear, concise, and correct. The quoted price is usually in the middle of the Maverick Literary Book Editing price range. 3. Light — The work performed is similar to heavy and moderate, but it is even less extensive than both. Again, editing is as much subjective as it is objective, so if it is Maverick Literary's judgment that your work requires light editing, congratulations! The quoted price will be on the lower to middle range of Maverick Literary Book Editing pricing. Copyediting — Attention is placed on ensuring correct spelling, syntax and grammar, punctuation, proper formatting of the manuscript/copy, as well as picking up on typographical errors. Suggestions are made, and at times, are implemented; the author is usually asked to make most revisions, if chosen, and another round of copyediting is performed. PRICE: $1.50 per manuscript page.
Proofreading — This is generally the final step in the editing process. The author has signed off or has agreed with the editing, and now he or she needs another set of eyes, so to speak, to ensure correct spelling, grammar and syntax, punctuation, formatting, and there are no typographical errors. PRICE .75 per manuscript page.
